Back for More: Treaty United and Derry City Set for FAI Cup Rematch

By Emma Dineen There’s something different about cup nights in Limerick. The floodlights, the sense of occasion, the chance to defy expectations. This Friday, the Markets Field will once again play host to that magic, as Treaty United welcome Premier Division heavyweights Derry City in a mouth-watering Second Round tie in the 2025 Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup. A Rivalry Reignited The backdrop to this clash is rich in recent drama. The last time these two sides met in the FAI Cup was in October 2022, under the lights at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium. On that occasion, Derry struck early, with Jamie McGonigle and Brandon Kavanagh putting them 2–0 up inside 16 minutes. Enda Curran pulled one back from the penalty spot after Jack Lynch was fouled, but despite a late surge from the visitors, including a near miss from William Armshaw, Treaty fell just short. Derry marched on to the final, where they would eventually lift the trophy. Two years later, the roles are reversed in some ways....

Treaty United Men Draw Derry City in Home Tie Treaty United’s senior men’s side will host Premier Division giants Derry City in the second round of the FAI Cup. This fixture is a rematch of their memorable 2022 semi-final clash, where goals from Jamie McGonigle and Brandon Kavanagh gave Derry a narrow 2-1 win, despite Enda Curran’s 30th-minute penalty for Treaty. Having finished as runners-up in last year’s competition, Derry will be determined to go one better this season. May 16th – Treaty United 4-0 UCD Back at the Markets Field and back in form! Treaty took control from the first whistle and never looked back. Lee Devitt broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, coolly slotting home from a sweet Mark Byrne assist. Minutes later, Karl O’Sullivan was fouled in the box, UCD went down to 10 men, and O'Sullivan smashed the penalty home to make it 2-0. With the extra man, Treaty turned on the style. With plenty of action in recent weeks, here’s how the month of May has unfolded so far: May 2 – Finn Harps 0–2 Treaty United (Men’s First Division) A long trek north to Ballybofey paid off for the men’s side. Robbie Lynch made an early impact, scoring his first of the season with a 6th-minute header from a corner. Treaty’s defensive discipline kept Harps at bay, and in the 88th minute, Mark Byrne sealed the deal with a sensational solo goal, curling his shot into the top corner for a solid away win. May 3 – Treaty United 1–3 Shelbourne FC (Women’s Premier Division) Facing a Shelbourne side that has long been a tough opponent, the women showed real spirit. Limerick’s loyal supporters, wrapped in scarves, clutch burgers and cups of tea, eagerly settle into their seats. In the dressing room, players pull on their freshly laundered kits, ready for the challenge ahead. Around the stadium, final touches are made, corner flags planted, flood lights flicker on with a low hum.  Yet, behind the scenes, often unnoticed by the cheering crowd, is a dedicated team of volunteers who make it all possible.
